WITH AN HOUR until she was due to pick up Pippa at Nat’s, Becks lingered at the soccer complex. The pitch at the middle school earlier today went better than expected, but dread crept into her stomach at the upcoming conversation. She’d known Dante and Amara since college, each standout athletes with Dante a star midfielder on the men’s soccer team and Amara a gifted gymnast. They’d moved to Hollydale for these jobs and to deepen Amara’s connection with her grandmother, Miss Louise. It was one thing when her pride got the better of her and it only affected her; letting her coworkers and teammates down, however, left a deep wound.

She only had a few days remaining on Frederick Whitley’s offer that would reimburse her original asking price. Her employees and friends deserved to know she was leaning toward accepting it.

She paused when a text chimed on her phone. Up on the screen popped the date and time of the Ramirez family get-together, taking place next week. A second later, another bubble popped up from Carlos, adding how much he wanted her there.

Her heartbeat accelerated, and her skin warmed as she reread the text. Everything was happening so fast. All those years ago, she’d fallen in love with him the minute he brushed the black lock of hair off his forehead and introduced himself on the soccer field.

Two years older than her, he’d been the epitome of calm unlike her more impulsive self. She tended to kick first and think later whereas methodical Carlos was always calculating angles and would gladly sacrifice glory for the good of the team. When they started dating in high school, she fell for the way he valued tradition while she tended toward whatever was shiny and new.

And yet he’d been the one to break up with her, going from happily-ever-after to a cold future in mere minutes. And she’d never been quite the same. His recently mending those pieces of her broken heart felt a little overwhelming, like the pace of their new friendship in light of everything swirling around her, most of it a direct result of the fire.

She walked from one room to the other in the administrative building, cleared for business once more. The indoor fields, concession area and party zones in the prefab steel building were progressing, but the construction crew had taken the afternoon off since the electrician couldn’t be here until tomorrow. At least they’d made progress with the smoke damage, the reports encouraging, but not enough to stop her from considering Whitley’s offer.

Amara greeted Becks. “Hey there. We’ve had three new registrations today, and me and Dante found out we’re having a baby boy. I received a clean bill of health after that indigestion scare.”

“That’s great.” Her spirits soared and she hugged Amara.

Then Becks returned to earth. She still had to tell them. Anything else would be unfair.

“Except we also had four cancellations.” Amara rubbed her belly, the swell more noticeable with each passing day. “Sorry this little guy isn’t older or you’d have one more on your roster.
